Berry PTFA

Our ‘Parents, Teachers and Friends Association’ is committed to supporting the school, children and staff. The PTFA at Berry Pomeroy Parochial CE Primary school aim to raise money to help the school access additional resources, school trips, activities and more to benefit all our children. We aim to raise money through fun, social and enriching activities.
We meet regularly to discuss what to do and where the money raised goes.
We see our role as equally fundraising and creating a strong ‘Community Spirit’.

How we work
At the beginning of each Academic year the committee hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) with, parents & carers & Sue Bower. We review the previous year and discuss ideas for the year ahead. This will include ways to build the school community, fund raising ideas and goals for the money raised to be spent on.
Each year has a key aim for raising money. 2016/17 we donated money for 16 ipads for our children. 2017/18 we focused on outside space upgrades including a welly stand, bike shed, and a potting shed. In addition to our focused target – additional donations go to school trips, theatre performances, seasonal gifts, musical instruments, cooking equipment and more. This year we bought a Zoo Pass for the whole school to access 2 trips plus a large donation to school trip transport.
We keep you informed on what the money raised is spent on. All our joint efforts are always rewarding and enriching for all our children.
What we do
Below shows a range of activities which took place in a year at Berry Pomeroy 2017/18. Some are annual events and some new. We are always open to new ideas.
School Christmas Fair:
A memorable event for all. The fair consisted of games, Jarbola, handmade gifts, great raffle hamper prizes donated by our local community including Local Lamb, Zoo tickets, Christmas cake, Jewellery and much more! The Fair was run for our children to play traditional games from 2.15-3.15, in small groups and then after school for parents and carers.
Mince Pies:
After the Annual School Christmas Carol Service the PTFA serve tea, coffee and mince pies in the Village Hall. We work hard to further Christmas festivities with social gatherings.
School Disco:
We aim to run 2 school discos a year in the Village Hall for our children after school. There are hot-dogs on offer plus sale of finger lights, balloons, and glow/glitter face paint. This is always a very popular event.
Crafty Christmas:
This is a great annual event within school hours for the children on the last day of term before Christmas. Children bring in a shoebox and fill with up to 10 of their own creations. There are little angels, reindeer’s and Christmas tree decorations to adorn your homes.
Christmas Cards:
The children have the opportunity to design their own Christmas cards. You can choose if you would like to purchase professionally printed card packs.
Sponsored challenges:
In 2018 the children were given a matchbox to fill with as many ‘mini’ objects as they could find. Family and friends sponsored them per item. Our winning number of objects in a matchbox was 102! We will be looking for a new idea for 2019.
With many positive experiences shared on how this is a great engaging activity we offered this as an Easter Event after school. As well as Bingo we had many Easter prizes and refreshments. It was great family event.
Seasonal refreshments:
Throughout the year we offer Coffee mornings and refreshments after School events such as church services, Harvest Festival, sports day and more. For the summer term we have ‘Lollipop Fridays’. In addition we try to offer healthy options such as fruit pots and melons wedges. We are a nut free school so we always mindful of this.
Our children work hard potting vegetables plus watering and maintaining the plants in gardening sessions throughout the year. The value of seeing the seed to the table and the health knowledge gained is so valuable for our children. The PTFA work hard maintaining our outside spaces and gardens. Surplus produce is often sold to parents and carers and flowers adorn the playground. We will be working hard to enhance this experience in years to come. Volunteers are fundamental for this to keep running.
Summer Fair:
Our biggest fund-raiser is the Summer Fair. This is always filled with great atmosphere whatever the weather. Bunting is adorned and the stalls range from BBQ, Plants, Toys & Books, Bids & Raffles, Bouncy Castle and Traditional games. Each year the Berry Pomeroy School traditional Maypole Dancing takes place. Our advertising poster is created by our Class 6 children.
Bag 2 School:
Bag 2 School is a free fundraising scheme. They collect and sell unwanted clothes to importers and wholesalers in many countries. (see bag2school.com). We arrange 3 of these a year and will inform you of the dates. It is a great fund-raiser.
The giving machine is a way to raise funds for the school for free when you shop online.

How it works: When you shop online you generate commissions (with over 1,500 retailers including Amazon, John Lewis, eBay, Sainsbury’s and Next). Your commissions are converted into donations for your chosen causes. You can raise funds for free for our school! Please do register and select ‘Berry Pomeroy Parochial CE Primary School’.

‘A huge heartfelt thanks to our wonderful PTFA who are an integral part of our school community, providing support to our children, teachers, staff, parents, and local community alike by enhancing the school’s resources and children’s experience of education.’
